Polyurea Roof And Deck Waterproof Coatings

Polyurea is being recognised internationally as the ultimate coating system for roofs, basements, bunds, steels, tank linings and other applications. The durability and flexibility of Polyurea coating means that it can be used in some of the harshest conditions in the world including hulls of ships and barges, aircraft carrier decks and North sea oil rigs/ platforms for corrosion protection, pipe work protection and asbestos encapsulation.

The system has been further developed over the last 20 years for use in the waterproofing industry for basement waterproofing, tanking, reservoir lining, roof and deck waterproof finishes, concrete and steel protection, tank lining, and bund lining.


Polyprufe is fast curing, which allows for quick installation even at very low temperatures, and is water insensitive. Polyprufe creates a high quality, waterproof elastic sprayed membrane which has many advantages over traditional waterproofing systems. It is very cost-effective when compared to conventional solvent-based products.

Polyprufe is hot spray applied by MacLennan through a Plural Component Proportioning system. Once the Polyprufe coating has been sprayed, it can take foot traffic after 10 seconds and light vehicular traffic after a few hours. Polyprufe coatings and linings are a Polyurea based, high end, seamless, elastomere, which has exceptional mechanical properties and chemical resistance and durability.

  • Polyurea vs Polyurethane

    Polyurea is closely related to polyurethane. Both are two component systems made with Isocyanate-based materials. The second component in polyurethane is polyol resin, the other component is Polyurea which is a polyether amine. In terms of performance, conventional polyurethane requires a catalyst, which is sensitive to temperature and moisture. Low temperatures can slow the reaction time and moisture can interfere with the reaction causing blistering and other negative effects.

    Polyurea, on the other hand does not require a catalyst. Reactivity for these coatings is fast, is typically 3-10 seconds.

    Polyurea can be sprayed at -20 but where primers are required they need a temperature of 5 degrees.

  • Polyurea vs Epoxy

    All epoxies require a catalyst. They are sensitive to temperature, humidity and moisture, giving them a narrow window for application. Epoxies generally have extensive cure times, requiring more downtime and greatly increasing the time required for multiple coats. Unlike Polyurea, epoxy coatings offers little or no elongation properties – thus leading to the frequent failure of the coating with expansion or movement of the substrate occours.

  • Polyurea vs Cementitious

    There are a number of cementitious coatings available. They are mostly trowel or brush applied, although some can be sprayed applied. Some claim a degree of flexibility, but cannot provide the flexibility or elastic properties of Polyurea. All cementitious coatings have long setting and curing times. Cement based screeds can be made waterproof with additives such as SBR but they are then expensive and have long drying times.

  • Polyurea vs Asphalt & Bitumen

    Unlike Polyurea, Aspalt and bitumen systems either require hot works or are multi layered. They require a longer period of time to lay and do not have the durability of Polyureas. Polyprufe is a seamless membrane that can be handled and walked on within 10-12 seconds of application.

  • Polyurea vs Methyl Methacrylate

    Polyprufe is far more durable than Methyl Methacrylate, has less odour is more resistant to impact and abrasion.
