Historic Building Preservation
MacLennan are often called upon to design waterproofing systems for historic buildings.
Most grand houses were built with basements for storage, servant's kitchens, etc. MacLennan have waterproofed many basements in country houses, estates and hisotrical buildings across the UK.
Prior to the First World War, basements were commonly used as accommodation for domestic staff. Their inclusion within the building structure was often made simple because of the need to dig deep foundations. They were often kept dry by effective drainage systems but, after a century and more in the ground, the drainage is often completely filled with silt, ground levels raised and the masonry is full of hydroscopic salts from the ground.
In the 21st century, the need to either re-waterproof or install a waterproofing system to both historical basements and throughout the building, is ever increasing with the ever-changing use of basements and breakdown of the original waterproofing.

Waterproofing systems for historical buildings
Not only can we design and install your waterproofing system, we'll also guarantee that the design and materials used are sympathetic to the fabric of the building and often completely demountable and can be guaranteed for a period of 10yrs or longer for special projects.
MacLennan has the experience and knowledge to undertake waterproofing works for historical buildings. We've worked closely with the likes of English Heritage to install suitable waterproofing systems which are either completely demountable or still keep the aesthetics of the property to as close as original as possible.
Over the last few years we have completed numerous projects on historic buildings, such as:
- Waterproofing a museum’s leaking roof
- Stopping free lime from ruining the artifacts
- Designing and installing waterproof solutions to 4 basements on the estate where the Duke of Clarence built for royalty in the 1740’s.
- Waterproofing basements in Historic vaulted buildings in Bath, Salisbury Cathedral Close, Central London and on numerous country estates.
- Designed waterproofing for Historic forts and castles.
