Seminar overview

In this CPD session, Ian will guide attendees through the critical principles of effective waterproofing design, with a focus on compliance, risk mitigation, and long-term performance.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Designing for Compliance and Warranty Approval
Ian will demonstrate the importance of robust waterproofing design that meets all relevant industry standards and satisfies the requirements of third-party warranty providers such as NHBC, Premier Guarantee, and LABC. He will highlight how early-stage design decisions can impact compliance and liability
  • Stakeholder-Centric Design
The presentation will explore how the design team should assess and incorporate the needs of the client and all stakeholders to deliver the correct grade of waterproofing, in line with BS8102. Ian will explain how to interpret environmental grades and select appropriate systems accordingly.
  • Understanding BS8102 and Combined Systems
Ian will break down the current British Standard BS8102, explaining the different forms of waterproofing (Type A, B, and C), and why combining systems is often necessary to meet performance and durability expectations. He will also clarify the requirement for two forms of waterproofing in certain scenarios, especially where risk is high or consequences of failure are severe.
  • Why Waterproofing Systems Fail, and How to Prevent It
Drawing on decades of experience, Ian will share real-world examples of failed waterproofing systems and the design flaws that caused them. He will outline best practices to ensure systems are designed to avoid failure, protecting both the structure and the professionals involved.
  • Waterproofing Concrete Decks and Buried Roofs
The session will conclude with guidance on waterproofing podium decks and buried roofs over basements, areas often overlooked but critical to overall system integrity. Ian will explain how to protect the client and design team from the financial and reputational risks associated with failed waterproofing.

Golden Thread of Information & Building Safety Act Compliance
This CPD also addresses the Golden Thread of Information, a key requirement under the Building Safety Act 2022, ensuring that accurate, up-to-date, and accessible information is maintained throughout the lifecycle of a building. Ian will explain how waterproofing design fits into this framework, and how to document decisions and specifications to support compliance, accountability, and safety.

Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how to design waterproofing systems that are not only technically sound but also legally compliant and aligned with modern building safety regulations.

"In terms of feedback that was one of the best seminars we’ve ever had. There’s no need to book any other waterproofing representatives as this company has gone top of my list of consultants for that field of work.”

Mark Coughlan / Furness Partnership

“Training was great, refreshed and improved our understanding of waterproofing systems and causes of failure, highlighted the importance of a single point of responsibility. Thanks to Ian."

Justin Ives / Managing Director / Spetisbury Construction Ltd.

"At the end we all had a better understanding of what waterproofing means and how to achieve it successfully. We have used Maclennan many times and have confidence in their advice, detail design, knowledge, support and installations.

Their positive, one stop approach is really refreshing and their willingness to take ownership and responsibility sets them apart from their competitors. ”

Kind Regards / Bernadette Maguire R.I.B.A Associate Architect

“Thanks once again Ian, everybody in the office has been commenting about your presentation. They all were amazed by your energy and the passion of your talk. Awesome!

To be honest, in some years of having been organizing these CPD seminars, none has caused such a pleasant post-talk atmosphere.

It was good to have you, I am tempted to invite you once a year just to refresh the conception of our monthly CPDs.”
